The little flower and the snow

Winters always seem to last longer than they are! Yet amidst all the snow when you see the littlest flower rising above the earth with a leaf or two in tow, you know spring has finally arrived. Life has many winters that could turn the kindest hearts into stone but one day the snow does melt and so do these hearts. I just keep looking out for the little flower that braves the cold and stands up to welcome the Sun. Because I have seen many harsh winters disappear whenever that flower blooms in my heart.

School Reunion

It was pouring cats and dogs just like it did every year on a school reopening day! It seemed like they had all got into a time machine and nothing had changed. Braving the knee deep waters and the heavy rains, they had gathered to the place they loved and cherished more than anything else in the whole world. The ecstatic screaming, reaching out to each other, tight hugging and loads of laughter - a ritual to mark the beginning of every school year was not skipped. But this year was different, the little school girls were now beautiful grown up women of the world. And they were back to their alma mater - St. Paul's Convent Girls High School for a very warm, mesmerising, emotional and cosy reunion!

There is this wonderful quality about school friends - no matter how many years later you bump into each other, the love and magic remains the same. I just realized how easily I could confide in all of them, how caring and loving they all are. The excitement, the bonding, the madness it was all there for everyone to see. Since the school was closed for the summer vacations, we had to shift to the coffee shop right opposite it. And boy, did we cause a riot there or what! We could not contain ourselves and what ensued was chaos good enough to trigger the creation of another universe (no exaggeration whatsoever!). While at school, we were always reprimanded for being the noisiest batch ever and we left no stone unturned to ensure that we can never be robbed of our title. The incessant chatter got so loud that we were yelled at by at least 2-3 people. One lady in particular tried to hush us three times before giving up and getting out of the coffee shop. In a different situation it may be easier to control ourselves but there was so much to know about each other all these years, so much to catch up on. All of us were talking at once and all of us were listening at the same time.

As we watched the rains pouring outside, sipped on some hot cuppas, relished some gooey brownies and spicy sandwiches, old memories, old habits, teachers, incidents that we thought we had long forgotten became very fresh. It was like letting out precious moments that were cherished in the deepest corners of your heart and reliving them. We had all moved on, become accomplished professionals and homemakers but the little girl inside us had not vanished. She appeared out of oblivion at the mere sight of her beloved school and took pride and joy in living her life again.

When it was time to say goodbye, the little girl disappeared again and it was time to return to the grown up world, this time with a promise of meeting again and as often as the world would allow us to.

Just remembered this very special Billy Joel number for all my dahlings:

She can kill with a smile
She can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child,
But she's always a woman to me
